The Ministry of Coal recently held a high-level review meeting to assess the performance and progress of captive and commercial coal blocks across Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Telangana, and Gujarat. The meeting, chaired by Ms. Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary & Nominated Authority (AS&NA), brought together coal block allottees, senior central government officials, and representatives from the concerned state governments.
The primary agenda was to review operational achievements, address existing challenges, and strategize measures to boost coal production in these key coal-bearing states.
Coal Blocks Under Review
A total of 39 coal blocks were examined during the session, distributed as follows:
- Madhya Pradesh: 33 coal blocks
- Assam: 2 coal blocks
- Arunachal Pradesh: 1 coal block
- Telangana: 1 coal block
- Gujarat: 2 coal blocks
Current Operational Status
- Madhya Pradesh has 13 operational coal blocks, out of which 9 are actively producing coal.
- Telangana has 1 operational coal block currently producing coal.
- In FY 2024–25, producing coal blocks from these states together recorded 34.80 million tonnes (MT) of coal output.
- In the current fiscal year 2025–26 (up to 31st July 2025), production has already reached 10.80 MT.
Focus on Expediting Remaining Coal Blocks
The Ministry highlighted the urgent need to operationalize the remaining 25 coal blocks in these states. Faster commissioning will help:
- Strengthen domestic coal supply
- Reduce dependency on coal imports

A total of 39 coal blocks came under review — 33 in Madhya Pradesh, 2 in Assam, 1 in Arunachal Pradesh, 1 in Telangana, and 2 in Gujarat. The performance of captive and commercial mines in these regions has been steadily improving. Madhya Pradesh currently has 13 operational coal blocks, with 9 actively producing, while Telangana has 1 producing block. Collectively, these producing mines delivered 34.80 million tonnes (MT) of coal in FY 2024–25, and have already achieved 10.80 MT production in FY 2025–26 (as of 31 July 2025).
The Ministry stressed the importance of fast-tracking the operationalization of the remaining 25 coal blocks to enhance domestic coal supply, cut down on imports, and meet the nation’s rising energy demands.
